Trip 10, Part 3, Three More Weeks in August in St. Joseph, Missouri

This post covers our next three weeks in St. Joseph, Missouri, leading up to our trip to Louisville, Kentucky at the end of the month.

Week 1

The week started with Cindy hosting the neighborhood ladies monthly coffee get together. Every month our neighborhood ladies get together for coffee and socializing and a different resident hosts the event. Cindy has been to several of the coffees and when the person hosting this month was unable to host, Cindy volunteered. She scheduled the coffee for 9:30 am, and figured a few people would be early. We also expected a large turnout since we are the newbies of the neighborhood. Typically, 10-12 women show up, but Cindy would beat that when 16 showed up. At 9 am, I took the dog upstairs to our craft room/office, where we would remain for the duration of the event. Heather came over just after 9 am to help, and surprise, surprise, at 9:15 about half of the ladies arrived. The rest arrived by 9:30 am. Everyone had a great time and Cindy’s coffee get together was a hit.

Midweek, the Culvers were traveling to Los Angeles so we dropped them off at the airport. That night, we filled in for them in their cornhole league at Prestyn’s, our favorite wine bar. We lost both games, but not by much. We still aren’t ready for the cornhole big time yet.

There has still been a decent amount of humidity here in northwestern Missouri. I now measure the humidity in how many t-shirts have to change in a day. Three is the record so far.

At the end of the week, we worked on putting in a new door to our garage. Scott’s cousin John, who has an amazing amount of construction knowledge, came over and showed me how to change out the door. Here is the opening once the door was removed, and the door in the garage.

Here I am working on it and the final result. This was a three t-shirt day.

Week 2

The week started with us picking up the Culvers up at the airport upon their return from California. Midweek, Scott and I decided to try out the Copper Hill nine hole golf course located at our favorite wine bar, Prestyn’s. This was a small course with tiny greens.

This is the eighth hole green. Scott is 6’2″ and his head was only three feet from the hole. The green was about 12 feet across.

The course was challenging, but enjoyable. There is a link to Copperhill Golf Course at the end of this post.

On Friday night, we went back to Jowler Creek for another live band.

The dog was out again and as friendly as ever.

We had a few bits of rain, but stayed dry under our umbrella.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening. There is a link to Jowler Creek Winery at the end of this post.

On Saturday night, Cindy, Heather, and I went to the Kansas City Great Balloon Glow.

So exactly what is a Great Balloon Glow? It is supposed to be a huge public event with food trucks, vendors, and…….drum roll please……..hot air balloons. And not just hot air balloons, but hot air balloons you can get rides in and that “glow” in the air once it gets dark. Let’s take a look at what we encountered there.

On the walk up to the event, we were greeted by a very long row of porta-potties. This turned out to be a good thing as there were thousands and thousands of people at this event.

We bought our dinner from a food truck, and walked around checking out some of the vendors. So check, check, everything was there…..so far. Here are a few general pictures of the event.

And here are a few of the balloons.

Now I am no balloon expert, but I was under the impression the cool part of hot air balloons was that they left the ground and went up into the air. Notice the lack of “up in the air” in my pictures. It turned out they didn’t have the correct insurance for the event and there was a slight breeze, so there were no balloons in the air. At least not until after we left. Apparently, after we left, several balloons went up for a few minutes to “glow” then came right back down. Here are a few pictures from social media of what the event looked like once we were comfortable at our house. Even with it being a grounded balloon event, we still had a pretty good time. And we had no regrets leaving before it was completely dark. The event had thousands and thousands of people and we got home without having to fight any traffic. Had we stayed, we could still be stuck in traffic.

Week 3

We started week three with having to due some cosmetic and weather seal repairs to the back door of our house. Since replacing the door on the garage worked out so well, we decided to just replace the door. Here it is with the old door out and the screen I put in place to keep all of the flies out.

And here is the new door. We got pretty good at replacing doors.

On Friday, we picked up Corrianne at the airport. We had her fly in so she could watch the dog while we were in Louisville. Cindy and Corrianne got pedicures and we had a great steak dinner at the Hoof and Horn. If you’re in northwest Missouri and you have any time, you need to get a meal at the Hoof and Horn. Don’t let the exterior fool you. It is a plain looking place in a rough neighborhood. But the inside was nice and the food was outstanding.

The next post will be about our trip to Louisville, Kentucky to visit the bourbon trail with our friends the Webers. Until then, Cheers!
